Paris-Saclay
The Paris-Sud University is a founding member of the ComUE* “Université Paris-Saclay”. Established in December 2014, this unique institution brings together a group of universities, colleges and research organisations in the south of Ile-de-France.
These institutions chose to join forces within the ComUE “Université Paris-Saclay” by pooling their academic and research programs at the highest international level, in order to meet the challenges of global competition in education, research and innovation.
Paris-Sud University, member of the ComUE "Université Paris-Saclay”
By 2020, the Paris-Saclay Campus will represent 15% of French research. On a larger scale, it will form part of a cluster to strengthen the synergies between the partners, by transforming the Saclay plateau in a global research and innovation centre. Already established on the Saclay plateau, Paris-Sud University joined the project from its inception and is bound to become one of its central players. For Paris-Sud, the creation of the Université Paris-Saclay is an opportunity to showcase its training and research programs and to promote synergies with other partners. True to its identity and academic values, Paris-Sud intends to play a proactive role in building the university of tomorrow, along with the other associate members.
Strong commitment of Paris-Sud University...
In many ways, Paris-Sud University is one of the drivers of this dynamic. As a founding member among 18 other institutions, Paris-Sud University has been involved actively in the Paris-Saclay project right from the outset. The strength and diversity of its laboratories and joint research units, faculty, professors-researchers, technical and administrative staff, students, provide the credibility to support the international ambitions of the Université Paris-Saclay.
Today, Paris-Sud University represents half of the staff and students of this consortium of universities.
...In terms of Training and Research
Paris-Sud University participates in 20 graduate schools and coordinates 33 of the 43 master’s degrees of the Université Paris-Saclay. 90% of the master’s degrees offered by Paris-Sud are managed by the Université Paris-Saclay. But beyond this offer of master’s degrees, all Paris-Sud courses (DUT, bachelors, professional bachelors, but also diplomas in law, medicine, pharmacy, etc.) will eventually be labelled and managed by Schools within Paris-Saclay. As of now, the Bachelor of Science and Technology from the Institut Villebon-Georges Charpak, labeled as IDEFI (“Initiative d’Excellence en Formations Innovantes” i.e. Initiative of Excellence in Innovative Training) is at the forefront of “educational research”.
The 10 Research Departments of the Université Paris-Saclay host approximately 300 research laboratories across all disciplines and from all member institutions of the ComUE. Among these 300 laboratories that are open to the world, Paris-Sud University hosts 78 research units, shared with one or several other institutions or research organizations (CNRS, Inserm, Inria, Inra, CEA...).
Real-estate and scientific projects of Paris-Sud University within the ComUE “Université Paris-Saclay”
Already implemented on various locations of the Saclay in the area of Moulon, Paris-Saclay University pilots 4 flagship projects on the Paris-Saclay Campus:
- Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay
In the Campus Project, the implementation of the Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (ISMO) in the heart of the Belvédère area (Moulon plateau) pursues two main objectives: a scientific convergence between the founding laboratories of the institute and a closer cooperation between its staffs.
- Centre de Physique, Matière et Rayonnement
As a scientific and real-estate complex within the Campus Plan, the Center of Physics Matter and Radiation (CPMR) is a major centre for molecular physics and condensed matter (solid and fluid) physics of Paris-Sud University and the CNRS. The CPMR operation involves the rehabilitation or construction of four buildings, physics laboratories, reception centres for scientists and one education building for physics on the Moulon Plateau.
- Pôle Biologie, Pharmacie, Chimie
As part of a general reorganization of life sciences and in order to promote scientific cooperation, the project will bring together, on the Moulon Plateau, the Institut Diversité, Écologie et Évolution du Vivant (IDEEV), the Faculté de Pharmacie, the Institut de Chimie Moléculaire et des Matériaux d’Orsay (ICMMO) and a training centre for the master’s degrees of Chemistry and Biology.
- Campus Life and Community Facilities
The aim of the project is to create a lively, attractive and pleasant campus. It will offer the implementation or renovation of living spaces, housing, food offerings, meeting places and shared facilities on the Saclay plateau: a living place in the Moulon area with a university restaurant, sports facilities, a learning centre, a language centre...
WHAT’S A COMUE?
“Communauté d’universités et d’établissements” (Community of Universities and Institutions) or “ComUE” is one of three forms of consortia recognised by the Law on Higher Teaching and Research of 22 July 2013. The ComUE replaced the former “Pôles de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur” (PRES i.e. Centres for Research and Higher Education) which have become ComUE following the promulgation of this law.
