Eating and drinking

University restaurant or Cafeteria? What's the difference?

University restaurants offer balanced meals at an affordable price. For your main course, there is a choice of three dishes which can be combined with a starter, cheese and a dessert/piece of fruit. There is always a wide variety to choose from. The quality and hygiene of all university restaurants are controlled regularly.

If you decide to have lunch between midday and 13.00, you will need to be extremely patient! Queues are always long at this time of the day. If you want to eat in a universtity restaurant you should allow yourself at least a one-hour break between lectures.

If you are busy and don’t have a lot of time, there is always the "cafeteria" option. Sandwiches, croque-monsieurs, salads, sometimes also a dish of the day, croissants, cakes, yoghurts and fruit... all sorts of snacks and light meals are on offer for a healthy lunch and at a low price (from €2.50).

The advantage of cafeterias is that they are open all day. So there's no need to worry if you feel hungry between classes.

How much does it cost?

All university restaurants are managed by CROUS (a national student organisation). One meal ticket costs €2.90 (fixed price for 2009-2010).

The cafeterias are managed by CROUS or by a private company. This is the main reason why there is a difference in price between university restaurants and cafeterias.

However, the prices in the university cafeterias and restaurants are much lower than elsewhere. For example, the average price of a coffee is €0.60.

You have access to all university restaurants and cafeterias. The same ticket is valid in the whole of the Versailles region (which includes the departments 91,92,95,78).

One last thing to remember... you can only pay with cash or by bank card in university restaurants.
